Chesterfield, Virginia
Retail at THE LAKE is a retail architecture project in Chesterfield, Virginia, designed as part of the larger THE LAKE mixed-use development. Although positioned as an out-parcel, the project moves beyond typical out-parcel design to create a stronger architectural identity and pedestrian experience.
The retail phase includes a series of three buildings that help set the tone for the broader development. Traditional masonry, modern materials, and a cohesive color palette create a refined architectural language connected to the larger destination.
The design carefully balances tenant functionality with public-facing experience. Along the main road, the buildings conceal the practical needs of retail and restaurant tenants, while the internal side of the site creates a more pedestrian-oriented streetscape.
The architecture is choreographed around tight site constraints, complex grading, and drainage requirements. The sculptural facade along Genito Place acts as an intuitive entry marker for the overall development.
The result is a retail environment that supports restaurant and commercial tenants while strengthening the identity, arrival experience, and pedestrian character of THE LAKE.
