US National Whitewater Center
Charlotte, North Carolina.
Phase I of the US National Whitewater Center, a $36 million development, establishes a groundbreaking model for integrated outdoor recreation. As the world’s largest re-circulating whitewater facility, it merges natural landscape with engineered performance to create an immersive environment for paddling, biking, climbing, running, gathering, and relaxation. The architectural language is rooted in authenticity—employing raw, natural materials such as site-cast concrete and timber, shaped by precise, man-made techniques to produce a distinct vernacular that responds to both function and setting.
The masterplan was carefully conceived to harmonize environmental features with the demands of a dynamic user experience. The composition of structures—including the river center, boathouses, climbing pavilions, support buildings, and the pump/control house—follows a logic of flow, orientation, and spatial clarity. These elements serve over 4,200 linear feet of engineered whitewater channels and swiftwater rescue courses, as well as 60 miles of interconnected biking and pedestrian trails. One of the country’s largest outdoor artificial climbing walls further anchors the site as a hub for outdoor adventure and an official U.S. Olympic training site.
Liquid Design led the master planning, program development, full architectural design, and project management.
